Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a powerful tool that helps e-commerce store owners track their website traffic, user behavior, and sales performance. The latest version of Google Analytics is Google Analytics 4, commonly known as “GA4”.

In the tutorial below, we cover installing GA4 on your Payhip store in three simple steps 🚀

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account

1. Go to Google Analytics: https://analytics.google.com/

2. Sign in with your existing Google account, or create a new one if necessary.

3. Click Create > Account and set up an account. Think of the “account” as your business or brand.

4. You will then be prompted to set up the “property”. There can be multiple “properties” for the same account (or brand). For example, your website versus your mobile app.

5. Set up a property (your Payhip e-commerce store) by entering the website name (e.g. your store name), plus the timezone and currency that you want to view your reporting in.

6. Fill out your business details, and choose your business objectives (doing this will tailor the reporting experience to your specific goals).

7. Accept the “Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement” for your country or location, as well as their data processing terms.

8. The next step is to choose a platform. You’ll want to choose “Web” because Payhip is a web-based application.

9. Set up your web data stream: A stream is a source of data. In this case, the stream is your Payhip store. Enter your Payhip store URL, and give your stream a name; e.g. “Payhip Store”.

10. We suggest switching on Enhanced Measurement for more advanced tracking without the need for manual setup.

11. Click Create & continue.

Step 2. Start Collecting Data

How to find your GA4 ID for a new stream:

1. Click into your stream.

2. Copy the measurement ID at the top right of the screen (it should look something like this: "G-YL5D7ZQCSH").

3. Paste that into Payhip under Account > Settings > Advanced Settings > Google Analytics.

4. Scroll down and click Save Settings.

How to find your GA4 ID for an existing stream:

If you are migrating from another website builder to Payhip, and will be using the same domain, you may want to continue receiving data to the same stream. To find the ID for an existing stream:

1. Access your existing Google Analytics account and head to the Admin page by clicking the cog icon at the bottom left of the screen.

2. Under Data Collection and Modification, select Data Streams.

3. Choose the stream you want to connect to Payhip.

4. Copy the measurement ID at the top right; e.g. "G-4VPZGETQSJ".

Step 3. Verify the Connection is Working

Please note that Google Analytics may not display any data from Payhip for up to 24-48 hours. After waiting for this period to pass, if your real-time reporting is still not showing any data, you can try visiting your Payhip store for yourself in another tab to see if a page view pops up in GA4.

For example, here’s what my Google Analytics account is showing under Reports > Realtime Overview after visiting my Payhip store in another tab:

Help! Why is no data is showing for my Payhip store in Google Analytics?

Here are some troubleshooting steps to take if you are not receiving data to your GA4 stream:

  • Check that the code is correctly installed—Revisit Step #2 above.
  • Wait at least 24 hours for data to appear.
  • Check that you do not have any ad blockers or browser settings that could be blocking the tracking.
  • Use Google Tag Assistant or Google Analytics Debugger to verify the installation.
  • Visit Change Store Style > Cookie Banner in the Store Builder to confirm that you do not have Analytics Cookies disabled.

Key Event Tracking

Key events in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) are specific user actions or interactions on your website or app that are particularly important to your businesses’ success.

By default, we send a "Purchase" key event to Google Analytics whenever someone completes the checkout process on your Payhip store.

If you want to test this out for yourself, you can put through a test purchase on your store using a 100% off coupon code. More on that here.

Final Thoughts

Whilst Payhip has some built-in Analytics features, we recommend connecting your store to Google Analytics for more advanced insights into your store’s performance. The steps above should help you get started. For further training, please refer to this page.
