How to Create a Free Product

Payhip gives you the option to make any of your products completely free. It's a simple but effective way to reach a wider audience, grow your mailing list, or offer something special during a promotion. In this article, we'll walk you through how to set up a free product.

Please note that you still need to connect a payment processor to your store, even if you’re only offering free products.

Setting up free products on Payhip

Digital or Physical Products

To offer a digital or physical product for free, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Product Dashboard
  2. Click Edit on the product you'd like to change
  3. In the Price field, enter 0 and save your changes

Once saved, your product will be available for free. For digital products, buyers can download the file immediately at no cost.

For physical products, setting the price to zero means the product itself is free, but buyers will still be charged for shipping unless you've also set shipping to free.

Courses, Bundles, Memberships, and Coaching

For other product types, free access is managed through pricing plans. To set one up, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Go to your Product Dashboard
  2. Click Manage on the product you'd like to offer for free.
  3. Navigate to the Pricing tab and create a new pricing plan.
  4. Select the Free option and save.

Once the free plan is live, anyone can sign up for your course, bundle, membership, or coaching service. They will still need to enter their email address at checkout to create an account and access the content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do customers need to enter payment details for free products?

No, payment details are not required. For digital products, customers only need to enter their email address. For physical products, they’ll also need to provide a shipping address. For other product types (such as courses or memberships), customers will be asked to create an account.

Can I collect emails from free sign-ups?

Yes, absolutely. Free products can be used as lead magnets to collect email addresses and grow your mailing list.

Can I change a free product to paid later?

Yes, you can update the price of digital and physical products at any time. For other product types, you simply need to delete or hide the free pricing plan and create a new paid one.

Can I run limited-time free offers?

Yes, you can. However, if this is for a temporary promotion, it's worth considering using a coupon code or running a limited-time sale instead. Both options give you more flexibility and make it easy to revert to the original price once the promotion ends, without having to manually update the product.
