Email Consent For Customers

Introduction

In 2018 the EU introduced the GDPR law which requires that visitors based in the EU must consent to receiving emails before they can be added to a mailing list. The UK also has a similar law.

We help you stay in full compliance with these email consent laws by default. When we detect that your customer is based in the EU or UK we display a "Send me product updates and offers via email" checkbox that must be checked before the customer can be added to your mailing list.

For your customers based outside the EU and UK they would not see this checkbox and would be automatically subscribed to your mailing list.

How to edit email consent settings

Please visit your Marketing page and then click on the Mailing Lists tab

Scroll down to the Customize email consent settings button and then click it

A modal will appear giving you three options:

Automatically subscribe everyone to your mailing list
Automatically subscribe everyone outside the EU & UK to your mailing list, but get consent from customers based in the EU & UK before they are subscribed
Always ask for consent from customers to get subscribed to your mailing list - regardless of which country they're from

It's important to only choose the first option if you have double opt-in setup on your mailing list, or your have already received consent elsewhere from your customers that they'd like to be added to your mailing list. This is to ensure that you comply with EU and UK laws on email consent. If you choose the first option the email consent checkbox will never be shown on your checkout and all customers will always be added to your mailing list.

If you choose the second option, the email consent checkbox will never be shown for your customers outside the EU and UK - those customers will be added auto-added to your mailing list. However for customers in the EU and UK they would see the email consent checkbox, and would only be added to your mailing list if they check the consent checkbox on the checkout page.

If you choose the third option, the email consent checkbox will always be shown to your customers from every country. Your customers will only be added to your mailing list if they check the consent checkbox on the checkout page.
