What are root domains and subdomains?

Root domains are what you purchase when you buy a domain. An example of a root domain is  kingsandgenerals.net

Most people point their root domain to their online store.

Subdomains are additions to the root domain. For example  shop.kingsandgenerals.net

Instructions

To get your custom domain up and running with your Payhip store, we firstly need to know if you're planning to connect a root domain or a subdomain.

Show instructions for connecting root domain

HostGator doesn't let you control your DNS settings directly. To make the necessary changes to your HostGator domain, you must contact the HostGator support team and give them the following instructions:

  • Set your nameservers to HostGator's defaults
  • Disable all forwarding on your domain
  • Point your root domain's A record to the Payhip IP address: 45.154.183.183
  • Point your subdomain's www CNAME record to the Payhip-hosted domain: domains.payhip.com

After the Hostgator team have been able to help with the above, take the following steps:

  • Login to your Payhip account
  • Click on the "Store" link in the header and then click on the "Domains" tab - you'll be taken to your domains page
  • Click on the "Connect Existing Domain" button. A modal will appear, from there paste in your domain name and click the "Continue" button.
  • Finally click on the "Verify Connection" button. That's it!

Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.

If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Hostgator to help you figure out why.

  • Set your nameservers to HostGator's defaults

  • Let's say you're connecting a subdomain (like shop.kingsandgenerals.net). Point your subdomain's shop CNAME record (instead of "shop" your subdomain could be anything at all) to the Payhip-hosted domain: domains.payhip.com

After the Hostgator team have been able to help with the above, take the following steps:
