What are root domains and subdomains?
Root domains are what you purchase when you buy a domain. An example of a root domain is kingsandgenerals.net
Most people point their root domain to their online store.
Subdomains are additions to the root domain. For example shop.kingsandgenerals.net
Instructions
To get your custom domain up and running with your Payhip store, we firstly need to know if you're planning to connect a root domain or a subdomain.
Show instructions for connecting root domain
- Log in to your Google Domains account
- Click on the "Manage" link listed alongside your domain
- On the next page you'll see a list of links on the left hand side. Click on the "DNS" link
- On the following page, scroll down to the "Resource records" section and click on the "Custom records" box
- Next, you can click on the "Manage custom records" link
- You'll be able to configure your records from here. There are two required rows you must have:
● Host name: (leave blank) Type: A Data: 45.154.183.183
● Host name: www Type: CNAME Data: domains.payhip.com - When you're done making changes, click the "Save" button
- Login to your Payhip account
- Click on the "Store" link in the header and then click on the "Domains" tab - you'll be taken to your domains page
- Click on the "Connect Existing Domain" button. A modal will appear, from there paste in your domain name and click the "Continue" button.
- Finally click on the "Verify Connection" button. That's it!
Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Google to help you figure out why.
Show instructions for connecting subdomain
- Log in to your Google Domains account
- Click on the "Manage" link listed alongside your domain
- On the next page you'll see a list of links on the left hand side. Click on the "DNS" link
- On the following page, scroll down to the "Resource records" section and click on the "Custom records" box
- Next, you can click on the "Manage custom records" link
- Let's say you're connecting a subdomain (like shop.kingsandgenerals.net). You'll need to add a new CNAME record for "shop" (or whatever your subdomain is called). Click on the "Create new record" button
- Under the field "Host name" type shop (or whatever your subdomain is called) and under the field "Type" choose the CNAME dropdown option, then under the "Data" field type domains.payhip.com and finally click the "Save" button
- Login to your Payhip account
- Click on the "Store" link in the header and then click on the "Domains" tab - you'll be taken to your domains page
- Click on the "Connect Existing Domain" button. A modal will appear, from there paste in your domain name and click the "Continue" button.
- Finally click on the "Verify Connection" button. That's it!
Now we wait. It can take up to 24-48 hours for domain changes to update.
If it’s still not working after that, you should contact Google to help you figure out why.
